In his independence anniversary speech, President Muhammadu Buhari hinted on the plan to unban twitter in the country, but with certain conditions.
Remember that the microblogging website was banned in Nigeria in June 2021 after it pulled down a tweet by Mr. Buhari which threatened a section of Nigerians due to a rising spate of violence in the area.
Since then, Nigerians have been clamouring for the unbanning of twitter in order to enhance the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. There have been demonstrations and even court cases, but still the Nigerian government is unyielding.
In this virtual meeting which is part of Reuters Global Journalism Seminar series, Nigerian investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, Fisayo Soyombo will be talking about ‘Nigeria vs Twitter: the fight for freedom of expression’.
He will discuss government attempts to block Twitter and crack down on unflattering reporting.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 24 November 2021
