….including conventional stations streaming online
If you run a TV or a radio online anywhere in Nigeria, then this piece of news is for you!
The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC has mandated operators of unregistered online stations in the country to register their stations within 30 days or have the commission to contend with.
While presenting provisional licences to the newly registered 67 stations on Friday, NBC’s Director General, Prof. Balarabe Shehu Ilelah said operators of unregistered radio and TV stations streaming online risk prosecution if they fail to file their papers for registration within the stipulated number of days. Ilelah also added that having a DTT or FM licence does not warrant a broadcaster to stream online. This means that registered stations that also stream online require a licence for their online services.
His words, “Let me use this opportunity to call on IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and all other broadcast stations that are streaming online to register with the Commission to avoid disconnection and prosecution. Broadcasters should note that, having a DTT or FM license does not warrant a broadcaster to stream online; they are two different licenses.
“I will also call on foreign broadcasters who have offices in Nigeria and they beam their signals into the country to come forth for registration with the Commission within 30 days.
“I must state that NBC is determined to collaborate with security agencies to clamp down on illegal broadcasters in the country.”
The NBC boss also added that newly registered stations must train their personnel with the NBC even before commencing test transmission. He said; “…broadcasters should note that part of the requirements for the commencement of test transmission henceforth is to send their staff for training at the newly established Nigeria Broadcast Institute,”
